KATE BOYAN CLASS
My name is Kate Boyan. I’m an Alaskan artist who has been creating beadwork, using mainly bead embroidery for over 40 years. I’ve made hundreds of items of clothing, jewelry and framed pictures over the years, but most of the time, the beadwork comes to fruition as bags, portraying and interpreting the world around me using nature as my main inspiration. The life of a full time beadworker gives me a unique perspective. The small intricacies of the direction to lay the beads and the way to combine colors is something that is important to me. When you spend as many hours at the bead table as I do, you understand that there is a state of flow you can reach in your creativity just by the act of doing. I’ve always been a firm believer in wearable art and like to think of the beadwork traveling here and there even when I’m stuck inside working in my studio. I design exclusive, one of a kind beaded bags for my clients, never saying no to a curly haired poodle or ornately dressed horse (some of my strangest orders). In the end, I’m happiest when I’m working on a show, because then the bags are my intricate, experimental weird ideas. I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to use a medium I love to create works of art on a daily basis.
